Motion-Capture Hits the Road

September 01, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
New Brunswick, Canada - Measurand once again went beyond short demos, continuously demonstrating their ShapeWrap II motion capture system and their newest hand motion capture products ShapeHand and ShapeHandPlus for the 3 days of SIGGRAPH exhibits. Demonstrating in their booth at SIGGRAPH 2005, Measurand kept their live continuous demonstrations informal with non-stop visitor interaction.

Bev Stymiest, Director of Sales at Measurand says, “We were very pleased, again this year, with the turnout and reception we received at SIGGRAPH. Our ShapeWrap II full body motion-capture system and ShapeHand hand capture system were up and running 100% of the time. We operated them in direct contact with visitors on the show floor and not on a stage or fenced off area away from onlookers. We interacted one-on-one with our visitors and allowed them to request moves and actions that they wanted to see. Our visitors appreciated our openness! We gave them a close up look at our systems and capabilities.”

SIGGRAPH 2005 was a huge success and Measurand will be hitting the road Fall 2005. The Measurand Motion Capture Demo Tour will spend several days in a number of cities throughout North America, Europe and Asia, visiting small and large-scale animation and game studios, college and university campuses, and research and medical facilities.

The portable go anywhere motion capture systems – ShapeWrap II and ShapeHand can be demonstrated virtually anywhere, requiring only about an hour of set-up time. We have a self-contained wearable system that captures static and dynamic human shape and motion anywhere in a manner that is affordable and practical. It is not tied to cameras, marker systems or magnetic fields and is so simple that anyone can use it. Capture the complete poses and movements of subjects whether they are in the dark, surrounded by metal, seated or moving, or completely enclosed in systems like a space suit, cockpit of plane, tank, car, etc.”

About SIGGRAPH
By the tens of thousands, attendees come to a SIGGRAPH conference for the exclusive opportunity to acquire new products and skills that they need to succeed and thrive in this dynamic industry. This is the place for companies seeking international recognition and exposure during one intense, focused week in the world's only trade show devoted exclusively to the worldwide market for computer graphics and interactive techniques. Overall attendance at SIGGRAPH 2004 (Los Angeles Convention Center) reached more than 27,000, and even more are expected at SIGGRAPH 2005 as it returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

By its very nature, SIGGRAPH attracts an exclusive group of buyers from around the world, across all facets of this expanding technology. Much of the research in computer graphics is exploding into everyday products that are vital in today's technology-hungry culture. Organizations that support the tools used in computer graphics and interactive techniques are eager to take advantage of future opportunities and be a part of SIGGRAPH 2005.

About ShapeWrap II
ShapeWrap II, the flexible and adaptable motion capture system from Measurand. A great improvement over rigid exoskeletons, ShapeWrap II offers a mocap system based on ShapeTapes that flex. By conforming to limbs instead of following rigid paths, ShapeWrap II moves with the body to capture fine details of shape on a wide variety of body types. ShapeWrap II is field portable, wireless and durable. Individual tapes from ShapeWrap II may be used as multi-variable 6DOF input devices for digital content creation.

Measurand's ShapeWrap motion capture systems are currently being targeted to the academic markets of 3D animation and game development. ShapeWrap's unique features and benefits are catapulting it to leader in motion capture training systems.

“I saw a performer who had the tape wrapped around his arms and was using it to control the actions of a simulated 3-D character on screen. If you’ve ever dealt with motion capture systems that involve half-a-dozen cameras and cumbersome tethered body suits, the ShapeWrap idea is very compelling.”

About ShapeHand
ShapeHand is a wireless, portable and lightweight hand motion-capture system of flexible ribbon sensors that are not physically built into gloves but rather attach to virtually any glove and hand size. ShapeHand is not hand specific, its independent glove design enables it for use on both left and right hands and means it’s now possible to get an exact fit, dispose of worn-out gloves, and avoid wearing the same glove that you and others have perspired in and dirtied.

Built on the same adaptable platform and ShapeTape technology as the ShapeWrap II motion capture system, ShapeHand works with Maya, XSI, LightWave, 3D Studio Max and Character Studio, Alias MoCap, Motion Builder and Motion Builder Pro, and JACK.

About Measurand
No newcomer to motion capture and animation, Measurand Inc. is partnered with a number of 3D software developers and has been developing hardware tools and plug-ins for animators and their 3D packages. Measurand, incorporated in 1993, manufactures and sells shape sensors and shape-sensing arrays to a variety of markets including automotive safety, entertainment, educational, and research worldwide.

Measurand pioneered the use of 3D flexible arrays of distributed sensors and specializes in quality manufacture of flexible 1D, 2D, and 3D measuring systems based on fiber optics and other technologies. All Measurand sensors are complete, requiring no knowledge of optical technology or addition of electronics for their operation. Measurand's 2D and 3D sensors measure shape as a data set of positions and orientations along a curve or throughout an area or volume. Our powerful hardware and software products enable the measurement and control of shapes from static poses to high-speed events, in applications as diverse as virtual reality and geo-science.
