New Biff Mitchell Book at Fictionwise Simplifies Internet Marketing for Writers

“Too many writers stop pushing their books as soon as they get published and are never heard from again,” said author Biff Mitchell. “Writers – even on shoestring budgets – need to market their books and that’s what ‘eMarketing Tools for Writers’ is about.”

Fictionwise.com has just released the second edition of Mitchell’s marketing ebook for writers, an expanded edition of the book that saw over 10,000 downloads from the author’s website. “There are lots of books out there on marketing for writers, but ‘eMarketing Tools’ focuses on free to inexpensive tools available on the Internet that will allow writers to immediately begin promoting their books right out of their homes.”

“I’ve worked in advertising, marketing and public relations for most of my life,” said Mitchell, “and I’ve learned that traditional marketing through mediums like magazines, newspapers and trade shows is expensive and not necessarily more effective than a properly mounted online marketing campaign using the tools that I describe in this book.”

“eMarketing Tools for Writers” discusses over twenty Internet tools such as blogs, RSS (really simple syndication) feeds, podcasts, free media release sites, Internet radio, forums, and ezines. Each topic starts with a brief definition, followed by information on how it is used to market books, and ending with links to online resources for further information.

“Each entry is short, allowing writers to quickly identify the tools with which they feel comfortable,” said Mitchell. “The resource links let them explore the tools in more depth. The idea is to explain them quickly in easy-to-understand terms so that even computer novices can access and use them immediately.”

Mitchell, who served as international spokesperson for the 2005 Read an eBook Week, has described “eMarketing Tools for Writers” as an “ebook’s ebook,” a reference to the book’s intense use of links to Internet resources. “In ebook format, you can either click on the link, or cut-and-paste it into a browser,” said Mitchell. “It wouldn’t work well as a print book because the reader would have to key the link addresses into their browser … and some of them are several lines long. The book just makes more sense as an ebook.”

“Unfortunately, the book’s greatest strength is also its greatest weakness,” said Mitchell. “Some of the links will change, some will die, and some sites will change the nature of their services or just close. This is just the nature of the online world.”

In response, Mitchell has offered to send an email update to anyone who buys the book at Fictionwise.com and sends him proof of purchase. “Plus, I’ll be coming out with the 3rd Edition in the summer of 2006. I’ve already completed research into new technologies that are just coming onto the Internet. I’ll also be testing the links and updating the ones that are broken or lead to sites that have changed.”

In its present form, “eMarketing Tools for Writers” focuses almost exclusively on the technologies, but Mitchell plans to expand the scope of the book in the next edition. “The next edition will show how to develop a comprehensive web-based marketing plan using the technologies,” he said.

Biff Mitchell is the author of the cyber thriller The War Bug, available from Double Dragon Publishing in ebook format and coming to bookstores this October in paperback. His satire on the IT industry, Team Player, will be published by Double Dragon in 2006. Two of his novellas, Smoke Break and The Baton, are available in ebook format from Echelon Press.
