Nothing else comes close,” says Joe Vinson, Ph.D. (Source: MedicalNewsToday.com ), head of the study. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee appears to be effective - but Vinson warns that antioxidant levels found in foods and beverages do not translate directly into levels found in the body. The ultimate benefit is dependent on how effectively they are absorbed and utilized, and this is an issue that is still up for debate and research. The study was conducted by comparing 100 different food items (vegetables, nuts, spices, fruits, oils and beverages) and their role in the antioxidant process. Coffee clearly came out on top.
The study found that coffee provides more antioxidants to the diet than that cranberries, apples or dates. Antioxidants are vitamins and minerals that contribute in preventing oxidation (the process that can result in damaging cells and aging). In general, these elements have been connected to a series of potential health benefits, including the prevention of heart disease and cancer. Those found in coffee are referred to as polyphenols, because they bind to a sugar molecule that covers up the antioxidant group.
The study concluded that the average adult consumes 1,229 milligrams of antioxidants daily from coffee with the second highest source being tea at 294 milligrams. The remaining top five sources of antioxidants found by the study are; bananas (76 milligrams), dry beans (72 milligrams), and corn (48 milligrams) according to the Agricultural Department. The study used the additional figure provided by the Agricultural Department that on average an American drinks roughly 1.64 cups of coffee per day.
