After-School All-Stars Appreciation Banquet Honors Community Supporters

The After-School All-Stars formerly known as the “Greater Las Vegas Inner City Games” held an appreciation banquet to honor its many volunteer supporters. Teachers, business & community members, and board members, were among the invited. The event took place at the Wynn Las Vegas on Saturday, August 20 from 6:00 – 9:00PM. The crowd was entertained by Las Vegas Duo Steve August and Maria Gara “The SnakeBabe” who dazzled spectators with comedy, magic, juggling, and their trademark exotic creatures. Sferza, an intimate, ultra-hip magic act developed in Italy featuring amazing magic accompanied by acoustic guitar, also performed. The performers donated their time in support of the organization.

Danny Hernandez, Executive Director of East LA’s Hollenbeck Youth Center, formed “The Inner City Games” in 1991 to help give impoverished children the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities completely free of charge. The Inner-City Games offers a variety of clinics, such as basketball, soccer, swimming and volleyball along with less traditional activities like hip hop, chess, computer camps and golf. The organization creates a positive atmosphere, promotes self-esteem, and encourages youths to say no to gangs, drugs, and violence. Arnold Schwarzenegger joined Hernandez in 1995 to create the Inner-City Games Foundation.

The organization has grown extensively and now operates in 15 major US cities. The After-School All-Stars offers support for after-school programs in ten elementary and middle schools for children ages 7-14 years of age. All children between 7 – 14 years of age, who live in the Las Vegas Valley or surrounding areas, may participate in the After-School All-Stars program, but targets those who would not otherwise have a chance to participate. The organization is supported with donations from corporate, government, scholastic and personal contribution.
