Cop Hangs Up His Holster to Help Others

Adam Brown, resident of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, dreamed of being a cop like most little boys do. He realized that dream at the age of 19 when he was sworn in as a patrolman.

While battling bad guys and daily adrenaline rushes kept Brown’s life on the edge for three years, he felt there was more that he needed to do with his life; and as a newlywed the long hours logged kept him from his new bride.

Knowing that he wanted to own his own business, but with no experience as an entrepreneur, Brown researched franchises. Childhood memories of his beloved “Mom-Mom” (his maternal grandmother) being placed in a nursing home when the family felt they could no longer care for her spurred Brown to consider non-medical in-home care. He recalls the dreaded visits to the nursing home as a youngster, “I hated visiting Mom-Mom because of the overall depressing feeling of the facility, the smells, and most of all how upset she became when it was time to say our good-byes.” My family resented the time that my father spent away from us taking care of his mother in addition to the guilt that we all carried with Mom-Mom not being able to stay at home.

In his search for a franchise, Brown discovered Home Helpers and the services that they provided. He felt that this was a perfect fit for him and purchased his business in 2002. Brown says of the satisfaction of owning Home Helpers, “I love being in non-medial home care. I feel good about what we do and who we help.”

Approaching his 3rd year in business, Brown said, “Home Helpers has been very lucrative: we have approximately 175 clients and a staff of 90 employees. Obviously, money is important, but equally important is liking and believing in what I do. I still do caregiving if needed.”

Perhaps most satisfying to Brown is that his 96-year-old paternal grandmother is living out her golden years at her own home, with thanks to Home Helpers caregivers.
