TITUS CALLS FOR NEW FOCUS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY
==========
Las Vegas, NV — As gas prices hit record highs, Senator Dina Titus renews her call for greater focus on renewable energy and admonishes Congressman Jim Gibbons for siding with big oil companies in the recent national energy bill.
“Skyrocketing oil prices are a tax on Nevadans, which doesn’t go toward building new schools, paying our teachers or bringing affordable health care to our parents,” Titus said. “Yet with oil prices at $60 a barrel and the likes of Exxon having more than $25 billion cash on hand, Congressman Gibbons voted to give big oil a $2.8 billion tax break,” she said.
Titus has a long record of fighting for the environment and is a leading proponent of renewable energy. “As governor I’ll move toward making Nevada an exporter rather than an importer of energy. I’ll ensure we connect the state’s two electric grids so we can send solar energy north and geothermal energy south; and, I'll back the Frontier Line project, to connect the West from Wyoming to California.” Titus said.
Nevadans pay higher than the national average for gasoline. More than half of all energy is imported into the state. Many experts believe with an investment in infrastructure, Nevada could be a net exporter of energy.
“With 300 days of sun in Southern Nevada and massive amounts of geothermal energy in Northern Nevada, we have the natural resources to make energy a revenue generator rather than an enormous expense.” Titus said.
Titus is the only Democrat announced in the August 15th Democratic Primary. She has represented Senate District 7 for 16 years.
