On Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 PM CT, September 12 through October 31, 2005, Coaching for Excellence, a new internet business, offers a class designed to help parents learn new ways to parent their teens in the 21st century. This eight-week instructional series is called, “Parenting Your Teen”, and participants don’t have to leave their home to attend. [www.TheRelationshipCenter.biz]
Two things make this class unique. It is delivered by phone and Coaching for Excellence offers a 150% guarantee. The class costs $125 but participants get $187.50 back if not completely satisfied.
These sessions are actually teleclasses. Teleclasses are a new, innovative way of receiving information quickly in the comfort of one’s own home. A teleclass is simply a conference call, ranging in size from three to thousands of participants, where callers can hear the teleclass leader share his/her expertise, interact with other individuals on the call and ask pertinent questions.
When people register for a teleclass, they receive an email with a phone number and an access code. At the appointed time, they dial the US-based phone number, punch in the access code provided and are instantly connected to a conference telephone line with the other participants.
The cost is the price of the teleclass plus whatever long distance phone charges apply, depending on a person’s rates. For example, if a person pays $.05/minute for long distance services, then a one-hour call would cost $3.00 or nothing if a person opts to use the free minutes allotted with his or her cell phone.
Kim Olver, MS is the instructor for this teleclass series. Not only is she a licensed professional counselor but she was widowed when her sons were 13 and 15 years old. Ms. Olver says, “When my husband died, I knew I had to figure something out quick! He was the disciplinarian in the family and I was the pushover. It was Choice Theory parenting that got me through. I just want to share what I learned with others. My boys are 21 and 19 now and I couldn’t be prouder of the men they have become.”
Participants will learn about the five basic needs all humans have and why children and parents are engaged in the constant struggle between a parent’s need to keep his or her child safe and the child’s need for mastery and exploration. Parents will learn about the single most destructive thing in relationships, how to identify and replace the seven deadly relationship habits with caring ones and how to negotiate the differences in their relationship with their teen.
Benefits that have been reported by others using this approach include improved communication with their child, less conflict, greater ability to influence their child’s behavior, increased honesty and trust in the relationship, and greater confidence in their parenting ability.
