RHINO'S DOUBLE DIP OF DEBUTS FOR GARCIA GROUPS

Jerry Garcia Band Arrives On DVD for the First Time August 9

Legion of Mary Makes Long-awaited Debut on CD August 23

LOS ANGELES—Rhino turns a double play of debuts in August with two Jerry Garcia-led groups. Rhino Home Video releases the Jerry Garcia Band's first DVD, LIVE AT SHORELINE, August 9th to mark the 10-year anniversary of Garcia's passing in 1995. Later that month, on August 23, Rhino Records unveils Legion of Mary's first official CD, THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 1: LEGION OF MARY.

LIVE AT SHORELINE includes the Jerry Garcia Band's entire two-hour-plus performance in 5.1 Surround Sound and is available for a suggested list price of $19.99. A double-disc set, LEGION OF MARY features 14 live performances recorded during a series of West Coast concerts and is available for a suggest list price of $24.98. Both are available at retail outlets and at www.rhino.com as well as jerrygarcia.com.

LIVE AT SHORELINE was recorded September 1, 1990 at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California and remains one of the very few Garcia Band concerts to be filmed. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for the date, but the band could not play due to the tragic death of the Dead's brilliant keyboardist Brent Mydland a few weeks earlier. Instead of canceling the show, The Jerry Garcia Band stepped in and delivered a poignant performance.

Throughout the evening's two sets, the band performed an inspired mix of emotional covers including Motown classics "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" and "I Second That Emotion," the Beatles' "Dear Prudence," Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue" and "I Shall Be Released," Van Morrison's "It Stoned Me," Peter Tosh's "Stop That Train" plus "Run For the Roses" and "Deal" from Garcia's solo work.

In addition to the entire concert, LIVE AT SHORELINE also includes Blair Jackson's interview with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, a mini-documentary, various interviews with band members, and photo galleries.

Garcia formed Legion of Mary in 1974 for a seven-month concert run that spawned a treasure trove of electrifying performances known only to a few lucky concertgoers and dedicated tapers. Rhino Records launches a musical crusade to spread the gospel of Jerry with, THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 1: LEGION OF MARY.

Legion of Mary—Garcia, keyboardist and longtime Garcia collaborator Merl Saunders, saxophonist and flautist Martin Fierro and drummer Ron Tutt, who'd played with Elvis Presley—came together in December 1974 to play an adventurous mix of jazz and funk. Despite the band's short tenure, the members played off of each other like they'd been together for years and were able to move from style to style effortlessly.

LEGION OF MARY includes passionate interpretations of rock's roots with covers of Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock," Ray Charles' "Talkin' 'Bout You," Hank Ballard's "Tore Up Over You" and Presley's "Mystery Train." Garcia and company sink their teeth into Allen Toussaint's chestnut "I'll Take a Melody," and transform Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "I Second That Emotion" into an epic 16-minute-plus jam.

Blair Jackson's exhaustive liner notes include stories from former members about the band's development, and clear up some longstanding confusion surrounding the group's history. "For most of the past 30 years, Jerry Garcia fans and music historians alike have pegged the rein of the Garcia solo band Legion of Mary as roughly from November 1973 through early July 1975; a span of about 20 months and nearly 140 shows," Jackson writes. "However, research in newspaper archives and other sources in recent years have led to the inescapable conclusion that the only Garcia band that actually went by the name Legion of Mary was the lineup featuring Ron Tutt on drums, from December 1974 to July 1975; a little more than 60 shows."
