idX Seattle Earns FSC Certification

ST. LOUIS, MO – idX Corporation, the store fixture manufacturing, logistics and project management firm that is at the forefront of the green retailing movement, has earned FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certification for its Seattle division. Earning FSC Certification means that wood used in fixtures from idX Seattle can be traced back to the forest where it began. It ensures environmentally responsible forestry, processing and manufacturing of wood products.
“To my knowledge, we are the first large store fixture company to earn the certification,” said idX Director of Environmental Development Lisa Thompson, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP. “It is consistent with our strategy to lead the industry as a sustainable manufacturer.”
The FSC Certification process requires system-wide changes, including isolating the certified products, using special labels and diligently maintaining the chain of custody for each piece of wood used.
“From a woodworker’s perspective, sustainability is everything,” said idX Seattle Divisional Vice President of Product Development Mark M. Clemens, who led the Seattle FSC initiative. “If we run out of raw materials, we’re out of business…and so are our kids.”
FSC Certification provides a guarantee that the fixture’s chain-of-custody has been maintained. That chain-of-custody begins in the forest and includes all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution.
To qualify for FSC Certification, idX’s Seattle division was independently verified by Scientific Certification Systems, an FSC-accredited certification company. SCS examined idX’s record-keeping and systems, certifying idX to work within the FSC system and label its products with the FSC logo. idX’s FSC SCS Certification Registration number is SCS-COC-001441.
Following on the heels of the Seattle division certification, idX’s Louisville division is in the process of being audited for FSC certification.
In addition to being the first store fixture company to receive FSC certification and the first to have a LEED-accredited environmental officer, idX has demonstrated its environmental leadership in numerous other areas, including:
• Working with suppliers to require that they send raw materials and component parts using packaging that can be recycled and/or re-used.
• Establishing forums for raw material suppliers to present their sustainable products for utilization in idX products.
• Encouraging clients to utilize eco-friendly materials in their fixtures.
• Ramping up environmentally friendly practices throughout the company, including dramatic reductions in landfill tonnage, company-wide use of energy-efficient lighting, and eliminating the use of bottled water, plastic utensils and Styrofoam cups.
• Encouraging industry-wide involvement in sustainability through sponsorship of the idX Green Product Pavilion and the idX Green Product Challenge at GlobalShop 2008.
