CheapAutosInsurance.com Supports Green Tech
May 01, 2008 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Online since 2003, CheapAutosInsurance.com, based out of San Jose, California, supplies practical advice for drivers as well as delivering cheap insurance quotes to readers searching for the most affordable, comprehensive coverage available to them. Currently, the site is focusing on articles of interest to environmentally conscious drivers from data on potential liability insurance benefits to hybrid owners to techniques for improving gas mileage in existing cars.“Green tech is completely transforming the automotive industry,” said CheapAutosInsurance CEO Brian Severson. “People are not aware of the fact, for instance, that many insurers regard hybrid drivers as low risk, mature, ultra-responsible drivers. Increasingly companies are offering discounts to this special subset of the driving public. That’s a trend we expect to see increasing with the popularity of the cars themselves.”
Currently three insurers offer discounts for hybrid drivers: Travelers Insurance, Farmers Insurance Group, and GEICO. The first two offer price breaks of up to 10%, with GEICO offering 5%. “These discounts apply to conventional hybrids like the Toyota Prius,” said Severson, “and also to other types of alternative fuel vehicles. That’s a big help to people who are paying $5,000 to $7,000 more for their cars out of a sense of environmental responsibility. There are some federal tax incentives available as well, but insurance is an expense over the life of the car that can add up really fast.”
Even drivers who can’t afford to make the switch to the hybrid can lower their fuel costs with techniques like hypermilling, an extreme driving style designed to drastically lower fuel consumption. Hypermilling involves such measures as anticipating red lights and coasting to a stop rather than braking, increasing the distance at which you follow another car to decrease braking, driving under the posted speed limit, slow acceleration from a complete stop, using cruise control consistently, and actively monitoring gas mileage to identify and track potential wastage.
“Granted, insurers aren’t going to actively reward hypermilling per se,” said Severson, “but overall it’s a safer way to drive and will not only save gas in the tank, but greatly decrease a driver’s chances of being involved in a few auto accidents. The better your driving record the better your insurance costs. That’s a no-brainer. At let’s face it, at $3.60 on average for a gallon of regular, people are willing to try just about anything these days.”
