April 29, 2008, Overland Park, Kansas- Michael Tabman, 24-year FBI veteran and former police officer, has been on the frontline of a school shooting. He was the Special Agent in Charge of the Red Lake High School Massacre, one of our country's most deadly school shootings where 10 people died, including 5 students and the teenaged shooter. Utilizing his experience, Tabman has started his own security consulting firm, SPIRIT Asset Protection, where he conducts training on school and workplace violence prevention. Reflecting on recent school shootings from Virginia Tech to Delaware State University to Northern Illinois University, Tabman noted, "Sadly, we will probably see other school shootings between now and the end of the year."
Tabman stressed the need for educating not only school administrators and teachers, but students, school police/resource officers, business owners and employees as to what to look for and steps to take to help prevent these tragedies. In this recent situation in Indiana, the school's officer was investigating an unrelated threat and discovered this student’s online postings where the 16 year-old discussed support for the Columbine shooters.
“There were similarities in this case with the Red Lake High School shooting. Fortunately, this time there was an alert officer who did a great job in preventing another tragedy,” Tabman said.
Tabman has scheduled a workplace and school violence prevention seminar October 6, 2008 in Overland Park, Kansas. The seminar will give administrators, school officials and business owners the knowledge and tools to help prevent these catastrophic events.
