Englewood, Colo. – Baxa Corporation now has a CD available of the presentation, ‘The Pros and Cons of Parenteral Nutrition’ from the annual American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting held in Las Vegas this past December. The presentation features PharmD Gordon S. Sacks, who covers the current state of the practice and identifies the pharmacists’ role in the development of a safe system for parenteral nutrition (PN).

The CD program provides pharmacy directors and managers with an overview of the research that has been conducted on PN and discusses the difference between standardized PN formulations and a standardized process for PN systems. The program is intended to help pharmacies learn the safety issues surrounding the PN process and enable them to build a standardized program for PN following current industry recommendations for best practice. Participants who view the CD program, and return the continuing education form, are eligible for one contact hour of CE credit upon completion.

Presenter Gordon Sacks, PharmD, FCCP, BCNSP is Clinical Professor at the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine for the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is a 2008 recipient of the Stanley Serlick Award for Safe Practices in Parenteral Nutrition – an annual award to individuals or programs that promote safe practices in parenteral nutrition – which was presented at the February meeting of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) in Chicago, Illinois.

The parenteral nutrition program was recorded live during the Baxa-sponsored Exhibitor’s Theatre at ASHP. The Society is a 30,000-member national organization representing pharmacists practicing in hospitals, homecare, HMOs and alternate-site facilities. ASHP holds two annual meetings for members and industry representatives offering educational programming and exhibits that help health-system pharmacists improve their professional standards and make the best use of medicines and technology for patient safety and improved outcomes.
