ATLANTA OPERA ADDS A TOUCH OF JAZZ; ATLANTA JAZZ ARTIST, VALERIE HINES WIDENS HER “CIRCLE”.

ATLANTA, GA-One could easily be fooled into thinking the Capital City Opera’s annual On the Light Side show themed as the Gershwin’s: a Brother Act would be reminiscent of previous performances of the Gershwin brother’s classics, not in the least. But don’t take another’s word, opera and jazz lovers alike should see for themselves.

Closing out tonight at the Callanwolde Center for Fine Arts, the performance features four local jazz artists, including the contra alto voice of Valerie Hines, who recently released her sophomore CD “Circle”. Valerie Hines is considered to be one of the richest contralto voices heard in this jazz era. Contralto voicing is very rarely heard these days, but, Hines possesses the colorful harmonic lushness, producing a sophisticated and poignant sound.

Born in Florence, South Carolina, at and early age exposed to a culture primarily centered on the passion and spirituality of music, classically trained Hines, began playing piano at 5. Her career direction took shape as the diversity of musical experiences expanded creating a powerful gifted composer, singer, and songwriter. Debuting her sophomore CD entitled “Circle”; it’s featuring wonderful renditions of American favorites, including “Summertime” and “Fly Me to the Moon” as well as several original compositions. The music is lush, classic and passionately energetic. Legendary singer and songwriter, George Benson, compares Hine’s sultry sound to the great Nina Simone.

Performing her debut solo performance tonight with the Capital City Opera, Hines has built an impressive career as a singer, composer and master pianist. And to her credit believes in her Atlanta roots and is committed to giving back as she performs throughout the city. Singing warm and sultry ballads while conjuring musical melodies from the center, Valerie performs at Ray’s in the City during the Friday and Saturday supper hours.
