Inglewood, Calif.—-December 29, 2007—- Many homes in America have at least one or two old cell phones lying in a drawer or closet somewhere, doing nothing but collecting dust. Many people might see these old phones as trash, but one organization has turned them into treasure. The United States Veterans Initiative (USVETS) is collecting used and unwanted cell phones, which will be used to raise money for formerly homeless veterans and returning troops. The organization helps these men and women by providing housing and resources to help them find jobs and return to society.
USVETS is asking for the public’s help in raising money for those who served so bravely. They are asking the public to donate unneeded cell phones at their offices, located at 733 S. Hindry Ave., Inglewood, Calif. Phones can be dropped off Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the front desk or 24 hours a day in Room 206.
USVETS will collect cell phones until February 1, 2008.
The donated cell phones are sent to Pace Butler Corporation of Edmond, Okla., a leader in the cell phone recycling industry. Pace Butler pays for each shipment of cell phones they receive, while ensuring that each phone is recycled in a responsible manner and that no phone ever ends up in a landfill. The money raised benefits a worthy cause while the environment is spared of cell phones’ harmful toxins.
By donating cell phones, the public not only helps the environment, they also may help to save a life.
“We ask that you help us in our mission to end homelessness in our veteran population and ensure that all of the 300,000 troops now serving in Iraq will have a place to come home to if they find themselves in need,” said George Smith, case manager for USVETS in Inglewood. Every little bit helps to end homelessness in veterans and troops.
