John Fisk, MD Joins Health Volunteers Overseas Board of Directors

HVO is pleased to announce that John Fisk, MD, has joined the Board of Directors. Dr. Fisk has recently retired from the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine, where he served as a professor of surgery in the Division of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and as medical director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory.

"Dr. John Fisk is a wonderful addition, the passion he shares for education and helping those in need matches the mission of HVO" said Dr. David Frost of the HVO Board. "We are happy he has agreed to serve in this way!"

Dr. Fisk has a strong commitment to caring for those less fortunate both domestically and abroad. He has treated patients in Cambodia, Guatemala, Colombia and Korea. In addition, for the last 20 years he has worked with the Division of Specialized Care for Children (DSCC), traveling to small towns in southern Illinois providing free clinical diagnosis and follow-up care to those unable to get care in their local area.

In 2005, Dr. Fisk received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, which is a national honor given to a faculty member and graduating senior who demonstrate compassion, respect for patients and families and clinical excellence. In 2004, Dr. Fisk was elected Vice President of the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics and appointed chair of their Triennial Congress Committee.

Dr. Fisk joined the SIU faculty in 1990. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Minnesota and earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned his bachelor’s at Grinnell College. Dr. Fisk is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

A private, non-profit membership organization, HVO was founded in 1986 to improve global health through education. HVO designs and implements clinical education programs in child health, primary care, trauma and rehabilitation, essential surgical care, oral health, hematology, infectious disease, nursing education, burn management and wound care. In more than 25 resource-poor nations, volunteers train, mentor and provide critical professional support to health care providers who care for the neediest populations in the most difficult of circumstances.
