The AVP Hermosa Beach Open presented by Bud Light is the 2nd stop on the 2005 AVP Nissan Championship Series televised LIVE on NBC on Saturday July 23rd and Sunday July 24th at 4:30pm EST. In the first Championship Series Event in Cincinnati 4th of July weekend, May and Walsh were upset by Bronze Medalist Elaine Youngs and rising star Rachel Wacholder, the duo’s first loss since before the 2004 Chicago Open. Prior to this loss, May & Walsh had won 50 consecutive matches, more than halfway to their 89 match streak record. May & Walsh bounced back last weekend in Belmar New Jersey capturing the Belmar Open by defeating Youngs & Wacholder in the final.
The AVP Men have seen four winners in seven events in 2005. Olympian Stein Metzger & Jake Gibb captured their third win of the season in Belmar last weekend. The duo also won in Fort Lauderdale and Tempe and are the midseason favorites for 2005 AVP Team of the Year. Joining Metzger & Gibb in the winner’s circle are Nick Lucena & Phil Dalhausser who won in Austin, Olympians Jeff Nygaard & Dax Holdren who won in Santa Barbara, Casey Jennings & Matt Fuerbringer who won in San Diego, and Mike Lambert & John Hyden who won in Cincinnati.
Tune in as more than 150 of the top professional beach volleyball athletes descend into Southern California for the Hermosa Beach Open presented by Bud Light. The Women’s side features 2004 Olympic gold medal winners May and Walsh, and 2004 Olympic bronze medal winners Holly McPeak and Youngs. The men’s side is highlighted by three-time Olympic gold medal winner Karch Kiraly, AVP MVP Mike Lambert and 2000 Olympic gold medalists Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton.
The competition will be fierce as $250,000 is on the line in Hermosa Beach.
