Cooling Down from the Summer Heat Tips to Properly Maintain Your AC and How to Save Money!

Summer is here. It’s Hot! That means families are indoors seeking shelter from the heat. But how do you ensure your AC unit will keep your house cool during those hot summer months?

“Residents can maximize the cooling potential of their air conditioning unit by doing a few simple things,” Doyle James, president of Aire Serv® Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., said.

Aire Serv® suggests these simple tips to maximize your AC unit:
• Trim shrubs and bushes to allow at least 2 feet around the unit, and keep the top of the unit free from all growth. Keep grass clippings from hitting the unit when mowing the lawn.
• Check the filters monthly and replace as necessary.
• If the condenser is dirty, wash the outside with a hose – but don’t spray water inside the unit or on electrical components. Service technicians are necessary if it’s really dirty, because they use a special cleaner, apply oil to the motors and check the refrigerant charge and electrical components.
• If there is a deck built above the air conditioner, make sure you have at least 4 feet between it and the unit.

Residents can also save money by…
• Installing set back thermostats to automatically adjust the temperature at times you’re away from your home.
• Setting the thermostat to realistic temperatures – no lower than 72 degrees for cooling.
• If your air conditioner is outdated, you’ll save money by upgrading. Units with only one coil are inefficient and can use twice the electricity of newer models.
