26 November, 2007 – With the demand for art photography ever increasing, decorators and collectors from across the world have come to realize the undeniable qualities of landscape photography. The most important quality being the manner in which it intensifies natural beauty, and also the reason why fine art photographer Koos van der Lende’s decided to after 20 years of commercial photography, permanently leave the studio’s constraints for the outdoors. As a photographer of distinct proportions, Koos van der Lende is by his own admission an outright purist, who can spend days and sometimes even weeks researching the ambience of each potential composition. Not even leaving a trace of human footprints, his devotion and intensely personal engagements with the environment underline his status as a leading landscape photographer, and as a result has given art collectors and decorators the confidence to imbue interiors with the picturesque qualities of his landscapes.
Based in Pretoria, South Africa, Koos van der Lende’s organic photographic sense has allowed him to journey to many secluded location, sometimes leaving him completely removed from the world. Going to these extremes reconfirms his status as a meticulous craftsman with a unique understanding of the landscapes he chooses to surround himself with. With a notable reputation extending over more than 20 years, his portfolio consists of many vivid and sometimes monochromatic dramatisations, which blend natural and artificial lighting sources with little intervention during the printing and production process.
Thriving with precision is an inevitable trait in Koos van der Lende’s art. A characteristic which could arguably be considered to be a result of his understanding, intimacy and exploration of every location he visits. When measured as an art collectable, van der Lende’s photography highlights his personal relationship with the environment – which in many ways is a staging of events, captured in one single picture.
