Jersey City, NJ, November 15, 2007 - Comodo, a global Certification Authority and leading security company announced today its support for the expansion of Covenant House’s 17th Annual International Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth which begins on Thursday, November 15. This campaign is meant to shine light on an urgent problem of homelessness among children around the world. By providing support for this initiative, Comodo and Covenant House hopes hundreds of new locations will join the vigils it traditionally hosts at its 21 locations in North and Latin America.According to Covenant House President Sister Tricia Cruise, S.C., "Homelessness threatens the most vulnerable in society, our children and teenagers. Broken homes, poverty, abuse and neglect force our youth into desperate and life- threatening circumstances. We must unite to end this international tragedy." In the US alone, there are over 1.3 million homeless youth at some time throughout the year and 200,000 homeless youth on any given day. Almost 40 percent of the homeless in the US are under the age 18. Nearly 5,000 homeless youth die from assault, illness or suicide each year and 57 percent of homeless youth do not eat at least one day a month. The Candlelight Vigil is the beginning of a concerted effort to address this global crisis and coincides with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 12-18).
"We hope that by bringing international public attention to the issue through our extensive network of customers, channel partners and users, we can make a real difference to help kids by raising awareness and funds to help improve the futures of these homeless children," said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and Chief Security Architect of Comodo.
Covenant House has created a host of ways to support this effort including hosting a local vigil, lighting "virtual" candles and purchasing event branded merchandise.
