The Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret organization whose chief purpose is to protect the Presidency, led by the intrepid Thomas Hunter and his sidekick, Kenneth Sutton, and Victoria's Garden, a tight network of Louisiana men and women of mixed origin, led by the powerful Victoria Colbert (who uses New Orleans courtesans to obtain and control information) clash in a conflict that ultimately results in the first battle of the Civil War.
