With peak moving season complete, Mayflower Transit, the most recognized name in moving for 80 years, releases the 2007 Customer Relocation Study. The study tracks where Mayflower customers, over the last eight months, moved from, the most popular moving destinations and why they relocated.

Mobile American Society
According to Mayflower’s study, 55.3 percent of those who moved in 2007 had relocated at least one other time in the last five years, up from 54.5 percent in 2006. Including their most recent moves,

44.7 percent of Mayflower customers have moved once; 28.8 percent have moved twice; 16 percent have moved three times; 5.6 percent have moved four times; and 4.9 percent have moved five times. Where are they going?
The District of Columbia, South Carolina, Montana, Kentucky and North Carolina topped the list with 60 percent or more of moves going into these states. The states most frequently saying “farewell” included Nebraska, North Dakota, Connecticut, Michigan and New York with more than 60 percent of moves coming out of each of these states.

Driving Forces
Like last year, work factors were behind nearly half of Mayflower’s relocations in 2007. In fact, 48 percent of those who moved did so because of a job: 35.7 percent for a new job (compared to 33.8 percent in 2006) and 12.3 percent for a company transfer. Relocating for retirement was slightly down in 2007 with 30.4 percent of those who have relocated heading to retirement locations, versus 31.8 percent in 2006. Finally, health and personal reasons account for 21.6 percent of Mayflower customers’ moves, down slightly from 22.4 percent last year.

About the 2007 Customer Relocation Study
The migration data is based on the 79,539 interstate household moves handled by Mayflower among the 48 contiguous states, as well as Washington, D.C., Alaska and Canada, from January through August 2007. Other information is based on responses to Mayflower’s Customer Service Survey.
