Edinburgh based entrepreneur Jeff Shillitto today revealed that an order from The United Nations World Food Programme, for five high-tech HTC S710 smartphone devices, is the 1000th order to be received in just one year for his web based online retail business PowerupMobile.com (www.powerupmobile.com).PowerupMobile.com was set up after recognising a growth in the market for the use of mobile devices that connect to the internet, and to send and receive email. The company specialises in sourcing a wide range of hard to find high end mobile devices such as PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant), smartphones, GPS Sat Nav systems, Ultra Mobile PC’s and wireless devices for individual consumers and businesses, who require more from their phone such as email or high speed internet access, while providing sound technical advice.
It’s been a successful year for Shillitto (33), who launched Powerupmobile.com in September 2006 - the e-commerce company, based in Haymarket area of the city, has already experienced a £200,000 turnover in the first year and supplies a unique selection of up-to-the-minute data and communications solutions to high profile, international customers including The United Nations World Food Programme, Google, AstraZeneca and the BBC as well as sole traders and private consumers.
Shillitto explains, “For a small local company, with just two members of staff we are extremely proud that we can meet the requirements of high profile international customers such as The United Nations World Food Programme – reaching our 1000th order is a real milestone and reflects that we are at the forefront of technology within the mobile sector.”
He continues, The website currently receives around 1500 visitors per day so we have built up a strong presence and awareness online, especially within the UK, but now my ambition is to ‘power up’ even more clients with the most sophisticated, unique devices the market has to offer, concentrating on the business to business market. We’ll continue to focus on our carefully cut-out niche markets, offering all the ultimate new gadgets in the future from Virtual Laser Keyboard (VKB) to Apple iPhones. As technology advances, I aim to drive the business along side it.”
The company stocks all major brands with the option of sim free devices or on contract from one of the five major UK networks, many of which are not available via an alternative high street vendor or call centre but only through online purchasing. The company also supplies developers of software for Windows Mobile and Symbian devices
Jeff Shillitto was born in Malawi, Southern Africa in 1974 and was raised and educated in the UK from the age of 8 years (his father is Scottish and his mother Welsh). After graduating from Napier University with a BSc Honours in Industrial Design, his ambition to work for himself lead to the set up of ‘Thick ‘n’ Crunchy’, a Product Design Company. When that proved to be a tough market requiring heavy investment he set up another new company - ‘Channel 6 Multimedia’, a pioneering e-commerce web and internet design company providing services to a wide range of companies and online shops. With a solid client base and reputation forever growing within Scotland and across the UK, Jeff was inspired to put his knowledge of e-commerce and online marketing to use and diversified his experience into a new venture, which led to the launch of PowerupMobile.com. At present 75% of his business comes directly from consumers, and the rest from business.
