July 04, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
Naturally Africa Dot Org, a leading African travel and tourism promotion website, has chosen to focus on Sierra Leone as part of its portal development programme. The Sierra Leone Portal on Naturally Africa Dot Org comprises six (6) sections where site visitors can find accommodation, things to do and see, restaurants, travel agents and tour operators, local events and business listings. In addition, the portal offers visitors a detailed Sierra Leone guide including travel information, history, flora and fauna and recommended attractions in the country.

From 1990 to 2002, Sierra Leone was devastated by a brutal civil war however with the help of organisations like Naturally Africa Dot Org, Sierra Leone is pulling itself back on to the world's stage again, this time as a contender for tropical holiday destinations.

Says Suzanne Whitby, founder of Naturally Africa Dot Org, "Sierra Leone is an amazing country full of equally amazing people. When I think about the brutality of the war and the amputations that came out of that war, and then compare that with the excitement to turn the country around that I see today, I am both humbled and inspired. Sierra Leone is probably not for the faint at heart - it is for travellers who fancy themselves as a modern-day Christopher Columbus or Vasco da Gama who want to see the rumored beauty with their very own eyes."

Uplifting words, certainly, however most travellers want to know more about what Sierra Leone has on offer. How can a once war-torn country be the top tip for tourists seeking something a little bit different? With great ease, by the looks of things.

Fortunately, there is plenty on offer for beach-lovers, wildlife aficionado or cultural buffs. Sierra Leone has all the natural resources on which to build a healthy tourism business - a warm, tropical climate and smiling people, rich in culture, waiting to welcome the world back to Sierra Leone.

Miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches kissed by the sun all year round, green mountains with lush vegetation, African wildlife - depleted during the war, but the repopulation is going well - seafood restaurants serving freshly-caught fish from the azure ocean, a kaleidoscope of flora and fauna, colour and crafts - all here!

From the historic slave fort of Bunce Island, Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Tiwai Island Wildlife Santuary (boasting over 135 different bird species) to natural waterfalls and the Cotton Tree in the centre of downtown Freetown, Sierra Leone really does have something for everyone. There are many working holiday opportunities as well, for those who want to help Sierra Leonean's who are fighting to make a comeback.

"Hotels like the Lungi Airport Hotel are being refurbished, ready to welcome back real tourists instead of the UN officials who have been in residence for so long, and flight specialists like Kevin McPhillips Travel are promoting their unique flight services like crazy! These are all signs that Sierra Leone is back on it's feet and ready for business."
