The film “Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America” shares practical answers for America’s energy-related problems.
“Kilowatt Ours” will be broadcast nationally on public television stations in Spring 2008, demonstrating how Americans can save energy and reduce electricity bills in their own homes. The film illustrates practical solutions that help homeowners save more than $600 per year on energy bills while helping the environment and protecting human health.
Unlike so many other films designed to make us feel guilty and hopeless about the condition of the environment, this film shows how a normal couple living on a normal budget went about making changes in their way of life that actually made a difference – and how viewers can too.
Filmmaker Jeff Barrie takes viewers on a journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the solar panel fields of Florida, as he discovers solutions to America's energy related problems. Along the way, Jeff and his wife Heather share a plan to eliminate their use of coal and nuclear power at home by employing energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
The film reveals the consequences of our coal-powered economy. Today, more than 50 percent of our nation's electricity is generated from coal. In the southeast U.S., where household electricity use is highest, this amounts to more than 12,000 pounds of coal burned per home per year. Coal contributes significantly to problems such as childhood asthma and air pollution.
Buildings in America consume about half of all the energy we use. The typical American home emits twice the annual global warming emissions compared to the typical car. The changes explained in “Kilowatt Ours” add up, person by person, to make a profound difference in our environment and way of life.
