Combating the Monday morning blues

With Christmas approaching fast, shopping mall website Barnaby Lane has released some interesting figures on the habits of its online shoppers.Over the past 6 months (May – Oct 2007) the company has been monitoring the daily traffic of shoppers visiting their site www.barnabylane.co.uk and have come up with some surprising observations.
The results show that the busiest day for online shopping is a Monday, while the quietest day is a Saturday. Philip Price, owner of the site explained; “We were very surprised when the final results came in as we were not expecting Monday to be the busiest day. In fact with Saturday the quietest day it almost seems to show the opposite of a traditional bricks and mortar shopping mall.”
“We all know that the biggest sales day for a city high street is a Saturday, and these numbers seem to support this by showing that shoppers are out of the house and walking the streets.”
One explanation for the surprising numbers it that people are doing a little “Retail Therapy” on a Monday in an attempt to overcome the Monday morning blues. In fact this is supported by figures showing that the peak shopping visitor hours are daily between 11am and 4pm, a time when most people are at work.
As the web site ‘Barnaby Lane’ is predominantly a retail shopping site for consumers, only a small proportion of visitors coming to the site are there for business purposes.
Philip concluded by adding; “We will continue to monitor the numbers and it will be especially interesting to see what happens over the busy Christmas and January sales period. ”
It just goes to show that with online shopping on the increase, at some time in the future, Monday may well one day topple Saturday as the most important retail sales days of the week.
The percentage of visits on a daily basis are as follows:
Monday 16.49 %
Tuesday 15.57 %
Wednesday 14.90 %
Thursday 16.17 %
Friday 12.06 %
Saturday 11.16 %
Sunday 13.65 %
This data was gathered over a period of 6 months of visitors to the site www.barnabylane.co.uk
