Mabel’s Labels, a company that makes labels for the stuff kids lose™, was chosen as this year’s recipient of the SavvyMom Mompreneur™ of the Year Award, a nationwide reader’s choice contest held by SavvyMom.ca, one of Canada’s most popular e-newsletters and web sites for moms. This morning, the three contest finalists were featured on Canada AM, when SavvyMom.ca founders, Minnow Hamilton and Sarah Morgenstern, announced that Mabel’s Labels received the most votes out of all 400 nominees.

Mabel’s Labels, a Hamilton-based company started by four moms, began in 2002 as a part-time venture when founder Julie Cole decided to do something about all of her kids’ stuff that went missing. They created waterproof, kid-durable, personalized labels. Mabel’s Labels, now a full-time endeavor, sells labels online to people from all over the world. The company has 16 employees, over 250 Mabel agents selling on their behalf, and a partnership with Kids & Company, one of Canada’s fastest-growing childcare providers. Mabel’s Labels has partnered with numerous summer camps and daycare organizations, and the company has also developed school fundraising programs.

“When we started Mabel’s Labels five years ago, we really did not know what to expect,” said Tricia Mumby, co-founder of Mabel’s Labels. “The loyalty and support of our customers has been the reason for Mabel’s Labels’ success. We think we found a crying need in the marketplace that we were able to fill. We hope to continue to grow by identifying more innovative products that help improve the lives of our customers.

Mabel’s Labels has branched out to offer other items for children, including its newest product: personalized stationery kits, Write On! Mabel’s Labels was featured on “The View” this week as one of Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s mommy must-haves. With the company’s products featured in many respected media outlets, including Parents magazine, “Breakfast Television,” CBS’s “The Early Show,” and The Washington Post, sales have continued to boom.

According to the founders of the SavvyMom Mompreneur™ of the Year Award, their mission is to celebrate savvy mothers who saw an unfulfilled need, and took action in creating innovative solutions. This is the first year of the awards.

As winners of the award, founders Tricia Mumby, Cynthia Esp, Julie Cole, and Julie Ellis will enjoy an $18,000 prize package, which should help take their business to greater heights. It includes a cash prize of $5,000, an all-in-one monochrome laser from Brother International Canada, a professional label printer, a public relations plan from High View Communications, a workplace productivity assessment and program from Clear Concept Inc., a business plan review, tax review and personal tax return preparation from Henderson Partners LLP, a commercial/corporate legal services package from Gilberts LLP and Christa Plumley, and an office productivity package from Microsoft Canada.
