It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, It Came From Airport Security

BRISTOL, VA - Announcing the publication of It Came From Airport Security - an anthology of short fiction concerning what happens when confiscated liquids are dumped into trash bins. One year ago the news was flooded with images of airport security. Twenty-four people were arrested in east London, each one suspected of conspiracy to blow up airliners by mixing chemicals on board the planes. The immediate response was to confiscate all bottles of liquids and gels from passengers and to dump the contents of those bottles into large trash bins.

"We observed that there was more opportunity for chemicals to mix in the trash than on the plane," says Sarah Williams, co-editor. "First we said someone should write a short story about that. Then we said someone should have a short story contest."

And It Came From Airport Security was born. The call for stories went out through its blog and was picked up by Boing Boing, the internet's favorite "Directory of Wonderful Things." With an almost completely digital plan in place, Carl, Sarah, John and Glen Williams had their project off and running.

"We received seven excellent stories contributed from around the world," says C. Glen Williams, co-editor of the anthology. "The submissions showed a wide variety of ideas. Some were bitingly satirical, some were laugh-out-loud funny, and some were warm."

It Came From is available from Lulu.com, a premier online marketplace that provides a platform for people to create, buy, sell, and control digital content on demand.

The book - licensed under a Creative Commons license - serves as a starting point for other artists as well. "We elected to use an attribution and share-alike license," says Glen. "That means everything in the anthology can be built on, provided the original artists are credited and the resulting work is published under the same license."

In the year from concept to publication, very little has changed. "Anybody who has flown recently knows they're still confiscating liquids and gels," Glen says, "and while the bins might not be out in the open any more, you can be sure they're still just behind the scenes."
