First China-India CHINDIA FORUM Taking Place on August 30 in Shanghai, China

Shanghai, China - On August 30, 2006, the China Supply Chain Council (CSCC) will organize a one-day forum in Shanghai on the emergence of the CHINDIA region in multinationals' global supply chain agenda.

China and India. Rarely has the economic ascent of two nations been watched with such a mixture of awe, opportunism, and trepidation. What makes the two giants especially powerful is that they complement each other's strengths. China is still relatively dominant in global sourcing and mass manufacturing, India is a rising power in software, design and services outsourcing.

The event will bring together key experts - from both China and India - and will act as a forum to meet and exchange ideas on how the yin and yang of these immense markets are already converging and how the growing importance of China and India will eventually change your global supply chain.

- China leads India in foreign investment, a key contributor to economic growth, by a margin of 10 to 1 (US$60 billion for China, US$6 billion for India);
- India's exports were worth about $8 billion a month, and China's, $63 billion, with manufactured goods the bulk of both countries' exports;
- India expects to control 51% the global outsourcing market for software and back-office services by 2008. China, with its similar low wages, pales in comparison with only 4.9% of the outsourcing market.
- Annual trade between the two economies is still relatively small at US$14 billion, expected to grow to $20 billion by 2008 and $30 billion in 2010.
- China surpassed the U.S. to become the world's largest market for mobile-phone users. By contrast, India's entire mobile-phone population is about what China adds each month;
- India also has the second-largest number of English-speaking scientific professionals in the world, second only to the US. China and India graduates combined have 500,000 engineers and scientists a year, vs. 60,000 in the US.
