August 17, 2015 - Savvy Home Supply is a leading kitchen and bathroom remodeling company in Louisville, Kentucky, and also a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity. While providing customers with a new kitchen or bathroom remodel, Savvy Home Supply makes it easy for people to donate their used cabinetry and other building materials and household goods to the local Habitat ReStore. Habitat for Humanity is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1976, and inspired by the belief that every person deserves a safe and affordable place to live. Working towards this mission, the organization builds and renovates houses all over the world, relying heavily on donations and volunteer labor.
The Louisville affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, which has been around for about 30 years, works with local communities and neighborhoods to create affordable housing. Currently Louisville Habitat builds about 23 houses a year, with a long-term goal to more than double this number. Qualified individuals have the opportunity to buy a Habitat house (sold at no profit) with a 20 year loan that has zero interest.
Program participants not only have to meet specific program qualifications but they also are required to give back to the community, working a minimum of 400 hours of sweat equity for Habitat.
In order to obtain the funds necessary to buy materials to build new homes and rehab existing ones, the Habitat ReStore functions as a thrift store, selling used items like furniture, cabinetry, lighting, fixtures and other building materials. This is where places like Savvy Home Supply, a full-service kitchen and bathroom remodeling company in Louisville, Kentucky, make a huge difference.
When people hire Savvy Home Supply to complete a new kitchen or bathroom remodel, many important items like lighting fixtures, flooring tiles, kitchen cabinets, and even some appliances, are no longer needed. Instead of throwing these materials out, Savvy Home Supply makes it easy for customers to make a tax-deductible donation of these building supplies and home products to the Habitat ReStore for reuse and resale. And funds from the sale of these donated household pieces are one of the ways that Habitat Louisville continues to build houses. Savvy Home Supply owner Jon Hobson estimates that over the past year, Savvy Home Supply customer cabinets donated to the Habitat ReStore are valued at over $100K.
Talking about the importance of the donations received by the Habitat Restore, Dale Douthat, Director of the Habitat Restore, explains: "We sell an average set of kitchen cabinets for $1,500, which is a reasonable price. If we sell 48 average sets of kitchen cabinets, that creates enough money to build one Habitat house…Partners like Savvy Home Supply make a big difference. They make it possible for the Habitat Restore to have a much bigger impact on our community."
And Habitat for Humanity isn't only good for the people in the Louisville community, it's also good for the environment. In Louisville alone, the organization is credited with keeping between 4 and 5 million pounds of usable materials out of the landfill every single year. This is extremely important, especially given that about 30% of landfills are comprised of construction-related materials and demolition debris.
