Indience Chooses Perst Lite Embedded Database For Mobile Business Solutions on BlackBerry Smartphones

Indience, a Bangalore, India-based mobile software development company founded by SAP veterans, has integrated the Perst™ Lite open source, object-oriented embedded database from McObject® as a key client-side software component for BlackBerry smartphones in the Indience BlackBerry Suite that mobilizes business processes using new Indience Universal Bridge middleware technology.

Indience chose Perst Lite for the BlackBerry client software in its new BlackBerry solution suite because of the embedded database's superior speed, features, flexible pricing, and developer support, according to Srinivasan Subramanian, Indience CEO. "In particular, users benefit from Perst Lite's proven transaction mechanism, which ensures the integrity of critical business documents as they are shared between mobile users and the enterprise," he said.

The Indience BlackBerry Suite offers a set of applications that model standard business processes, and the ability to quickly create custom processes, on BlackBerry smartphones. The middleware is designed to work with this suite so that when a relevant document becomes available on a back-end system, it is "pushed" to the BlackBerry device of the user who must next work on it. When client-side processing is completed – for example, when a purchase order is approved or an analytics document completed – the transaction-based middleware automatically updates the enterprise system.

This push approach enables users to work in a reactive mode, and gives organizations the convenience of mobilizing business processes from multiple enterprise systems like SAP and Oracle using a single middleware infrastructure. The SAP NetWeaver-certified Indience Universal Bridge leverages the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to provide a secure mechanism to access enterprise data with authentication and data encryption.

To manage the data for business processes in the client application, Indience needed an efficient, highly reliable embedded database management system (DBMS). Other mobile database systems based on relational tables proved too slow. "Perst Lite's object-oriented model of data management fits more naturally with the underlying object-oriented Java ME technology used in BlackBerry smartphones, and delivers the needed performance," said Dilip Sridhar, Vice President - Products at Indience.

Perst Lite's transaction mechanism supports the ACID (Atomic, Consistent, Isolated and Durable) properties, meaning that all related data updates will complete as a unit or be rolled back. This is critical in ensuring the reliability of data exchanged between BlackBerry smartphones and back-end systems, Sridhar said.

Other Perst Lite features that improve the efficiency of Indience's BlackBerry client software include b-tree indexes for fast record lookup; XML-based import and export for backing up data; and built-in full-text search.

"Right now, corporations are only exploiting a fraction of the capabilities of BlackBerry smartphones, such as using it for e-mail. The Indience BlackBerry Suite mobilizes core business processes and automates them via users' BlackBerry devices. The Perst Lite embedded database enables our product to offer an advanced feature set through its highly efficient, reliable data management and transactional capabilities," Srinivasan Subramanian said.
