MindTools.com Survey of 10,310 Business People Reveals Job Happiness Strongly Related to Stress Management and Other Career Skills
(
PRLEAP.COM) New York, NY – MindTools.com, the most visited career skills site on the Internet, just surveyed more than 10,000 people from 139 countries on a wide range of workplace topics. Among the findings of interest to both employees and employers is the fact that employees who are confident in their stress management and other career skills are happiest at work.
Mind Tools CEO, James Manktelow, said "This confirms our long term belief at Mind Tools: People who invest in learning these skills really do get the most job satisfaction. Furthermore, these are skills that can be learned outside of the traditional classroom and, in fact can be learned free of charge on the MindTools.com site."
The survey compared 5878 people who were happy at work with 1177 who were not. Of these, stress management skills made the greatest difference. According to the Mind Tools Survey, 66.3% of people who were happy in their job were confident in their stress management skills, while only 42.4% of people who were not happy were similarly confident. This is a difference of 23.9%. In addition, there was an average confidence difference of 11.6% between people who were happy at work and those who were unhappy, across nine other career skills areas (time management, team management, leadership, communication, team-working, decision-making, problem-solving, and project and change management).
"Given that stress is a major cause of unhappiness, it makes sense that good stress management skills are strongly associated with job satisfaction." said Manktelow. "What also appears to happen is that people with good career skills are happier, presumably because they’re more effective and successful, and can work more harmoniously with other people."
"These survey findings are not only good news for employees, but they are also good news for company owners," Manktelow continued. "Happiness is a huge factor in employee retention. In these tighter economic times CEOs should note that happiness can be increased without changing employee salary or benefits."
